Songbird on a branch with dotwork sun

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A songbird perches on a leafy branch in front of a stippled circular sun. The bird's plumage is built from fine dots and short strokes, while the branch and leaves use clean single outlines. The design is entirely in black and grey ink, with the dotted shading creating soft tonal gradation across the sky behind the bird.

No, sit down, the toffee man will keep, and the seats at the back have the better view of the wire, which is to say none at all. You want the bird? Everybody wants the bird. Forty winters ago the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Marvel had a canvas sun painted over the ring, stippled by a sign-writer called Teodor who worked it in dots because a brush made it look like a cheap lamp.

The bird was called Mab, a thrush bought off a farmer near Ludlow for a shilling and a bag of seed. She sat on a painted branch at the top of the rigging and sang when the lamps came up, and the crowd in Ipswich would go quiet as a church. Money came in for three summers on the strength of that quiet.

Then the council wanted the field for houses, the lions went to a zoo in Kent, and the brothers quarrelled over the takings until there was only Mab and an old tumbler named Pell left to pack the wagons. Pell opened the cage the night before they sold the last tent. He told her it was the only honest act left in the whole business, which is the sort of thing you say when you have nothing else to offer.

She did not fly far. She sat on the tent pole in the dawn, turned her head the way she always had, and sang at the grey sun on the canvas as though it had finally risen. Pell said the sun looked a little brighter after that, though that could have been the morning. Now, who wants the last of the toffee?
