Feather tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink feather runs diagonally along the side of a finger, with its quill tapering to a fine point at one end. The strokes are fine and dense, giving the feather a soft, textured look against the skin. The photograph is monochrome, with dark shadows behind the hand and the lighting highlighting the curve of the fingers.

The ring is in the wrong man's waistcoat, and the vestry clock says four minutes to two. You stand by the cold radiator with the register open across your forearm, the way Mrs Pryor taught you, so the ink stays dry. You try to think of anything except the ring. Instead you think of the jay feather lying in the crease of the book, left there this morning with a note: keep this for the line where the names go.

You hardly know the bride. She came into the vestry at nine with mud on her good shoes and asked whether a register could be signed in pencil if the pen ran dry. You told her no. She laughed like a gate swinging and said her gran had signed her own wedding in pencil in 1953, and that marriage had outlasted the church roof. You had no answer to that, so you said nothing, and she left the feather.
Now the best man is patting his pockets with the face of a man who has lost a bet. You walk up the aisle with the register held out, past her sister fanning herself with the order of service, and bend to his ear. He finds the ring in the lining of his left sleeve, where it has been all along, and hands it over as if it were a coin from a Christmas pudding.
When the vows are done you rest the feather on the next blank line, then lift it away before the ink can dry around it. Outside, rooks are rising from the churchyard elms. One of them drops a feather onto the path by the gate, black and fine as pen-nib strokes, and you pick it up, still warm from the wall, and carry it back inside to find the right line.
