Get off that wall before the tide takes your boots, and I will tell you why the old turtle never sleeps on land. My grandmother said the swirls on her back were not decoration. Every curl was a current she had swum, and every dot was a night she had spent watching the lamps of the herring boats come on along the coast, one after another, like a village that had lost its way.

The young turtle who hatched under the dunes at Rosslare had no map but the moon. She scrambled down to the water with her brothers, and most of them were snapped up by gulls before the first wave reached them. She kept her head up and her flippers working, and the sea took her out past the lighthouse and kept going, further than any fish she knew, until the water turned the colour of a bruise and the cold went right through her shell.
Years later she came back to the same dune, big as a kitchen table, and found the beach fenced off for a car park. A boy with a bucket watched her haul herself up over the stones. She looked at him for a long time, then pressed her beak into the sand and dug, slow and stubborn, until the hole was deep enough to hold what she had come to leave. The boy asked his mother what the turtle was doing, and his mother said it was not their business to know.
So when you see the lamps come on out there tonight, count the dots on her back the way I taught you. Every one is a beach she did not forget. Now mind the step, love, and give me your hand.
