Sandal-style tattoos on both ankles and feet
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph taken from above shows two bare feet standing on wet grey stone. Bold black linework forms sandal-like straps around each ankle and across the top of each foot, with an outline suggesting a sole, and soft grey shading gives the ink some depth. The feet are centred in the frame with the puddled ground filling the background.

She worked through the night with the lamp hung low over the bench. Harness leather from the old carter's shed, stitched double where the pull would come, and a buckle she had kept in a biscuit tin since her husband's gelding died. She found herself cutting the straps longer than the pattern said. Her hands knew the arithmetic of a body on the move, even if her eyes could not picture it.
At dawn the rain had stopped and the yard was a sheet of puddles holding a white sky. The boy came back, took the parcel without looking inside, and set off along the causeway. Mags watched him go until the road bent behind the mill. Then she swept the offcuts into the bin and noticed, for the first time, that the puddle outside her door held a small upside-down shadow of the chimney, perfectly still and in no hurry at all.
