Swallow tattoo on the neck
Traditional · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow in flight is shown in profile, with its wings spread and its head turned towards the viewer, with a scrolled banner beneath it carrying the word Dad in script. The linework is bold and the wings are shaded with layered grey tones and dark highlights. The image is a close side view of the neck and ear, with a plain black-and-grey palette and a soft, blurred background.

The first swallow came through the crossing at ten past six on a Tuesday in April, which I know because I wrote it on the back of the manifest before I had the sense to stamp anything. It was pinned to the lintel above the booth window, dipping in under the corrugated roof as if it had paperwork of its own. Sergeant Okafor said nobody was to touch the nest in the lamp fitting, and that was the end of the discussion.

My father worked the Channel ferries for thirty-one years and taught me that swallows come back to the same eaves they left, and that a man who ignores them will have bad luck in the wheelhouse. He said it the way other men said grace. Every spring he would tap the glass of the galley porthole where a pair had nested and say, "Home, then," as if the birds had reported in.
When the forms came round this year, the passport check had a new line for emergency contacts. I wrote his name in capitals, then looked at the box for relationship and wrote DAD, then crossed it out because it looked like I was asking the department for permission. Behind me the swallow went out and came back with mud in its beak, working the same bit of wall it had worked last year.
At half past six a lorry driver from Lodz handed me his papers and asked why the booth smelt of rain. I told him the birds had come back, which is the closest I have come to a sermon. I stamped his page, the ink took cleanly, and I did not cross anything out this time.
