Swallow tattoo on the top of a foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A swallow in flight, with its wings spread and a curled tail, is tattooed on the top of a foot. The bold black outlines are filled with green, pink and yellow, and the wing has decorative scrollwork detail. The foot rests on a metal diamond-plate surface, and the photo is framed with a dark vignette.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every April the swallows came back to the eaves of Thornber Church of England School, and every April Miss Pell counted them from the window before she took the register. Eleven, she would say, and the children would shout it back at her, because that was how the day began.

The year the school closed, the parish invited everyone who had ever sat in those rows to a reunion in the village hall. Forty-two came. Tom Ashby brought a tin of biscuits shaped like the old school clock, and Ruth Garside brought the register itself, which nobody had asked for and nobody quite dared refuse. They read out the names slowly, the way Miss Pell used to. When they reached the name of the boy who had gone to sea at sixteen and never written, a swallow dropped from the rafters and settled on the lid of the piano, green and red and yellow as a boiled sweet. Nobody moved. Nobody wanted to be the one to frighten it off.

Miss Pell, who was ninety and had not been called anything but Miss Pell in living memory, rose from her chair and said there were still eleven. The room counted them, one by one, and came to twelve, because the bird on the piano had come home the way the swallows always did, by the long road, with its tail forked and its wings wide, and nobody there was willing to say it was a stranger.
