Swallows and dagger with Crochet or Die banner
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of two swallows in flight with a dagger running diagonally across the lower left. A rope-edged banner across the centre reads CROCHET OR DIE in capital letters. The linework is bold and even with no shading or fill, and the design is shown on a plain white background.

Dolly Pask had been crocheting since the wind dropped off the Nore, and by the third day becalmed the barge crew had stopped pretending they didn't want the blanket. "Crochet or die," she told them, tapping her hook against the tiller. It was the rule painted on the wheelhouse board by a skipper with more ambition than spelling, and nobody had ever argued with it.

Teague, the youngest hand, had two swallows inked on his forearm and a dagger on the other, a gift from a bargeman who never came back for it. He claimed the birds would carry him home if the weather turned. Dolly said he was being fanciful, right up until the fog came down thick as fleece and the swallows were the only things on the barge that still seemed sure of the way to the Medway.
They drifted a night and a day. Dolly worked one long chain through the cold hours, row after row, and when the mist finally thinned she found the mooring line had frayed nearly through. She knotted her yarn around the bow ring, pulled it tight, and the barge swung round on the tide as neatly as a stitch turning at the end of a row. Teague spotted the church spire at Hoo before anyone else and swore blind it was the birds.
Dolly unpicked the last loop and handed him the blanket, now a rope of wool as thick as a man's wrist. "Mostly it's the knot that saves you," she said. He took the hook the way she'd shown him, and his first stitch came out crooked, which she declared was the sea's fault and not his.
