A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tertia had the sail across her knees and the wind at her back when the old sailmaker Gaius came down the quay shouting that the grain ship would not wait. Her thimble was cracked, her fingers were raw from the waxed thread, and the seam along the leech had gone wandering again.

"Sew or die," Gaius said, dropping a bundle of pins into the pot of tar beside her. He had said it every morning for six years, and every morning it sounded less like a joke. The pincushion on his bench was a leather ball stuffed with wool and bristling with bronze pins, and someone long ago had stuck two little bone skulls on top of it, a dead joke he refused to throw away. "Wings for the speed of the thread," he said, as if that explained anything.

Tertia worked the seam. Stitch, pull, stitch. The sea hissed against the stones. Every pin she slid from the cushion seemed to carry the weight of the ships that had gone out with torn canvas and come back with nothing.

When the sail was folded and the last stitch knotted, Gaius turned it over, ran his thumb along the seam and grunted. It was the nearest thing to praise she had heard in years. Tertia pulled the pincushion towards her, pressed a pin through the wool and left it standing, a small bright line in the leather, and went to find her cloak.
