Black vine with swirls and small flowers

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A single black vine rises from a curled base at the bottom left and winds upwards in an S-shape, with small five-petal flowers spaced along its length. The linework is thin and smooth, with spiral tendrils branching off the main stem. The design is shown in solid black on a plain white background, with no skin or body visible.

Mind the step, child, the garden path goes up crooked because the ground underneath was never asked. Your great-aunt Nell planted the bindweed the year the old orchard came down, and she swore it was only ever meant to hold the wall together. Then it started climbing the chimney, and the hens went quiet, and nobody could say which of them had told it where to go.

What she did was tie a length of green twine to the gatepost and tell the vine it had until Michaelmas to decide. Every morning she checked it, and every morning it had gone a little further, curling back on itself like a dog settling, sending off little spirals to test the air. Where a tendril turned sharp, a flower opened, five white-to-black petals no bigger than a thumbnail, as if the vine were signing its name in a hand it had only just learnt.

By harvest it had reached the top of the lintel and the twine was gone. Nell went out at dusk with her shears and stood a long while, and then she didn't cut it. She sat down at the base where the stem coiled like a fist and said, quite plainly, that she'd been wrong about who was holding whom. The vine has been up there ever since, Michaelmas come and gone, and I have never once seen it reach the sky.
