Daisy chain tattoo around a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three daisies sit along a thin green stem that runs diagonally across the forearm, with a smaller daisy partly visible at the lower edge of the frame. The petals are outlined in bold black linework and filled with white and pale grey shading, and each centre is a solid yellow dot. The photo is taken close up on a light skin tone against a pale background.

The church hall still smelled of squash and floor polish, exactly as it had the year we left Hollins Primary, and Dawn Pritchard had already cornered me beside the trestle table with a paper plate of sausage rolls. "You haven't changed," she said, which was a lie we both enjoyed.

Back then, Mrs Kettering let us pick daisies from the field behind the bike sheds only if we made something with them, so every playtime Dawn and I sat on the cold grass and split the stems with our thumbnails. You threaded one stem through the next, pinched the yellow middles so they stayed bright, and kept going until the chain was long enough to loop round your hand three times. Dawn's always snapped by dinner. Mine lasted the whole week, and I was smug about it in a way I still find faintly embarrassing.
Then Dawn opened her handbag and took out a flat, brittle thing folded inside a sandwich bag. It was a daisy chain, the petals gone the colour of weak tea, the yellow centres dulled to ochre. "You gave me this," she said. "Said mine was rubbish and I could have yours instead." I didn't remember that at all. I remembered the smugness, and the walk home with the chain swinging from my fingers, and I had always assumed I'd kept it.
"I'd forgotten," I said, and she laughed, and then she hooked the old chain over my fingers, where it sat light as paper and somehow still held its shape.
