Two overlapping triangles on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a textured dark fabric, with the inner wrist showing a small tattoo of two overlapping triangle outlines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the shapes read clearly against the skin. The image is black and white, and the composition centres the wrist with painted nails visible at the upper right.

Sit down, sit down, the soup won't wait and neither will my knees. This is for the pair of you. My uncle Tomas cut sails for the fishing fleet out of Skerrow Cove, and he had one rule he would bellow across the loft whenever an apprentice got careless. Two cloths must always overlap, or the wind goes looking for the gap.

The summer Edith came up the lane to mend her father's nets, Tomas was cutting a jib. He pinned the canvas flat with lead weights, chalked a line, and took his shears to it. Edith watched him square the corners and told him, with the cheek of a girl who had nothing to lose, that a triangle on its own would never hold. He said it didn't need to hold on its own. He cut a smaller triangle, laid it over the first so its point sat just inside the other's edge, and pinned both. On the bare boards the two outlines looked like a shape that was still moving.

Forty years later, when his hands had gone too stiff for the needle, Tomas asked Edith to sew that same pattern onto a scrap of spare canvas and put it in his coat pocket. He died in February, and she kept the scrap in the drawer with her good spectacles. Every wedding in this village has had a sail stitched for it, but she never once asked for the sail to be perfect. She only ever asked that the edges overlap by a hand's width. Now raise your glasses to that, and to the wind, which will always find the gap if you leave one.
