Right, sit down, the lift's broken again and nobody's going anywhere until I've finished, so get comfortable on the landing lino. Forty years ago, when this block was still wet cement and promises, there were two hounds who lived under the bins at the bottom of Halden House. One was called Tobin, the other Sully, and they had been born in the same litter behind the Co-op and never once been apart. Nobody could say which of them led, because they never agreed on anything long enough to find out.

One winter the council men came with their van and their clipboards and said the estate was coming down. The dogs were to be moved, the bins were to be moved, and the families were to be given a flat in a place with a name like a garden. Tobin ran up the stairwell, Sully ran after him, and the two of them ended up on the roof of the eleventh floor, nose to nose on the wet felt, with the whole city lit below them like a spilt jar of loose change.

They could have taken different stairs. They didn't. They stood in the rain with their heads bowed towards each other until the men gave up and went home for their tea. That's the knot of it, see. Two heads, one loop, and the loop never once let go. Look at the railing next time you pass and you'll still find a bit of old wire wound round it, where Sully left his tag the night the bulldozers came.
