Symmetrical mandala across the upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a large symmetrical tattoo across her upper back and the base of her neck. The design is a V-shaped ornamental mandala built from fine and bold black lines, with scrolled filigree, repeated arches and pointed tips. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the soft grey background and straps keep the focus on the pattern.

Ivy had pricked the same V three times before her father noticed the paper was going soft at the point. He stood over the bench in his shirtsleeves, lamp in one hand, and said nothing for long enough that she set the pin down. The pattern was a collar for a lace order from the Lambert house, forty yards of it by Friday, arches stacked on arches, filigree curling in from the edges like ferns on a cold window.

"Your mother drew it differently," he said at last.
She knew. The old pricking book lived in the drawer under the window, and for a week she had copied its design by lamplight, trusting her hand to remember what her eyes had not kept. Her mother had worked the bobbins in the back room of the mill until the cough took her, and the book had been hers, every point pricked to a pattern nobody else in Nottingham could read.
Ivy laid the old sheet over her own. The lines did not match. Where she had sharpened the tips, her mother had let them round, each scroll ending in a small blunt loop like a thumb pressed into clay. Ivy had thought it careless. Now she saw it was counting: a loop for each pair of threads the frame could carry without snapping.
She pricked the next row slowly, and the paper held.
