Feather tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a person with dark hair tied in a bun, showing a small black feather tattoo on the side of the neck behind the ear. The feather is drawn with delicate, thin outlines and fine internal strokes, and a trail of small dots curves beneath it. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against a softly blurred warm brown background.

The lost property shelf at Thornbury Junction held eleven umbrellas, a bagpipe chanter and one grey feather tucked inside a ticket envelope, and it was the feather I kept reaching for when the trains ran late. Nobody had claimed it since March. The label, in the night porter's careful capitals, said only: Found on platform four, under the timetable board.

I wrote to the address on the rail pass that had come in with it. Mrs Ada Pellow replied by return in pencil. She had dropped the feather the afternoon her brother's train pulled out for Leeds, and she had not gone back for it because she could not bear to see the platform empty. She asked me to keep it safe and post it if the weather turned cold.

I did not post it. In October the swifts left the eaves of the goods shed in one dark rope, and I stood on the footbridge trying to count the flock against the sky. The next morning I pinned the feather to the noticeboard by the waiting room with a card that read: Still here, if you want it. Ask for Dan.

Mrs Pellow came on the last Saturday of the month, carrying her brother's old ticket wrapped in tissue. She took the feather without a word and held it up to the window so the light ran through the barbs. Then she showed me the little trail of dots she had sketched beside it on a scrap of paper. One for every station between here and Leeds, she said, so he would have something to count while he was away. I went back to the shelf afterwards and found I had nothing left to log.
