Ornamental dotwork neck and upper back tattoo
Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a bun is photographed from behind, showing a large ornamental tattoo that starts at the nape of the neck and extends down the upper back. The design combines a central feather or leaf motif, fern fronds, a stem with small buds, and a dotted mandala-style base. The work is entirely black ink in fine stippled dots and clean linework, set against a pale brick wall in a muted, high-contrast photograph.

The pricking card had to be done before the frame could be set, and Ada Wyatt was the only girl on the top floor of Horsley's who could do it without the needle tearing through the manila. Her mother had taught her with a sharpened pin and a ruled sheet, one hole at a time, until the holes stopped being holes and became shading. Dots packed close read as dark, dots spaced wide read as light. Mr Gedling, the designer, liked his ferns set in rows like soldiers on parade, and he wanted the Christmas collar pattern pricked by Monday.

On Saturday, when the floor emptied and the bobbins went quiet under their cloths, she took a spare card from the drawer and pricked something of her own. She began low with a round of tiny holes, a rosette like the edging on a christening cap, then worked upward: a stem with three buds, two fern fronds spreading like open hands, and at the top a feather, its quill left as one unbroken line of pins. She did not ask herself why. She only knew the eye wanted it.
On Monday Gedling held the card up to the gas lamp and frowned. "Who pricked this?" Ada said nothing. He turned it over, ran his thumb along the feather, and then, instead of sending it down to the frames, he carried it to the window where the afternoon sun came slanting over the yard wall. Every hole threw a small bright point onto the whitewashed brick opposite, so that the whole ornament hung there, pale and exact, a lace that nobody had to wear.
