Tabby cat on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A tabby cat is shown in a loose, sketchy outline, looking towards the viewer with its body turned diagonally across the arm. Black linework is combined with soft orange, brown and red washes that bleed beyond the outline, giving a painted watercolour effect. A red brushed wash sits behind the cat and fades out towards the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pell had told us the cat was called Biscuit, but he answered to nothing and came in through the scullery window whenever the kettle began to tick. By the second week of August he had claimed the top stair as his own, and the lodgers stepped round him with their suitcases like men passing a sleeping magistrate.

I was nineteen that summer and had taken the back room for the wages, which were mostly spent on ribbon and the bus to the pier. Biscuit took to sitting on my windowsill at dusk, tail wrapped over his feet, watching the red flag at the lifeboat house snap in the wind. Some evenings the sea went the colour of rust and the whole bay seemed to bleed into the sky, and he would lift one paw as if to catch it, then decide it was not worth the effort and go back to staring at me.

On the last morning my bag was packed and the bus was due at nine. Biscuit was not on the stair. I found him in the yard, stretched out in a patch of sun by the coal bunker, one paw flicked over his nose, his eyes half closed and gold in the light. Mrs Pell said he did that when he wanted you to know he had seen you go and did not mind. I left him a sprat from the breakfast plate and walked to the bus with the sea behind me, and the whole way to Exeter I could feel him watching.
