Striped cat tattoo on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A striped cat with pointed ears and whiskers curls across the arm, with its head turned toward the viewer. The design uses heavy black outlines, with bold stripes on the body and softer grey shading on the face and legs. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

The cat came up the spiral stairs at dusk, the way it had every evening since the relief boat left you on Scarrow Rock with a tin of pilchards and a logbook nobody had filled in properly for a year. You had not wanted a cat. Your father had wanted one, and then he had gone ashore with the fever, and the cat had stayed, sitting on the top step like a customs officer.

It was striped the colour of wet sand and sea smoke, and it would not sleep anywhere but the warm brass of the lamp housing. Each night it curled along the rail with its tail tucked round its front paws and turned its head to look at you as if you were late with something. You named it Mister Ballast because it was heavy and went wherever it pleased.
The fog came in on a Tuesday, thick enough that the foghorn sounded like a cow lost in a field. You wound the clockwork, cleaned the lens and wrote the hours in the log, your hand shaking more than the weather. Mister Ballast stood up on the rail, ears flat, and stared east towards the reef. You told him it was nonsense. He yowled once, sharp, and you thought of a bell struck wrong.
You went down to check the cistern and found the water low, and only then did you notice the ladder bracket rusted through, the rung beneath it snapped clean. Had you climbed down in the dark you would have gone with it. Back up in the lamp room the cat was asleep again, curled tight, one striped length of tail hanging over the gallery like a rope. In the morning you wrote in the log: fog, lamp steady, cat sensible.
