Watercolour-style cat on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tabby cat is shown tumbling or stretching across the forearm, with its head toward the lower left and its tail curling up. The loose, sketchy black linework is layered over soft orange, brown and red washes, with a pale red wash behind the cat and small green eyes. The left panel shows the full forearm design and the right panel is a close-up of the cat's head and whiskers.

Dear Nell,

The cat has taken over the packing shed, as I suspected she would. Mr Okafor from the cider barn says she came in off the Bramley rows in June and has not been out since except to hunt wasps. She is ginger going to rust, with a striped back like someone dragged a comb through marmalade, and she has eyes the green of unripe pears. I have decided she is called Pippin, though Dad insists on Tabitha, which is what the feed merchant's ledger says.
Last Tuesday she went after a windfall. It rolled off the ladder and down the slope, and she came after it in one long tumble, all four feet in the air, paws reaching for the red blur of the apple as if it owed her money. She missed, of course. She went arse over tit into the nettles and sat there looking at me as though I had arranged the whole thing. I laughed so hard I had to put the crate down.
I am writing because the lower field is going to be cleared in October, the Hendersons have sold it, and I have no idea where Pippin will go. Dad says she will go wherever the mice go. I think she will follow me, because she sleeps on the coat I left by the door, and that feels like a decision someone should write down.
Come up at the weekend if you can. Bring the good tin of tea. The apples are nearly done, and the cat is still sulking over the one that got away.
Love, Jo
