Take me far script on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reading Take me far runs across the side of the ribcage, with the letters in a slanted, flowing hand. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is solid black against light skin. The soft, neutral background keeps focus on the lettering, which sits horizontally just below the edge of a dark top.

The hydroponics bay on the Meridian Ark smells of wet basil and hot copper, and it was there that I found the note Teodor left when he went into cryo for the long sleep. He had written it in grease pencil along the inside of a coolant housing, in the looping hand he swore his grandmother taught him: Take me far. Nothing else. No name, no date.

The council voted that spring to wake nobody before arrival, so the message sat through forty generations of dust and maintenance rotas. I read it every shift while I changed filters. I assumed it was a prayer, or a joke about the air recyclers. Then, in the ninth year of my watch, I found the crew manifest, and Teodor's name was listed under Pilot Reserve, not Botany. He had been the one trusted to steer us if the drive ever failed.
The drive failed in the year our great-grandchildren were born, and the old navigators woke one by one to argue about course corrections. I went down to the cold vault with a lamp and a stylus and checked each pulse against the logs. Teodor's chamber was frosted white. Beneath the glass, his right hand lay open, and someone had written on the inside of his wrist in fading ink: far.
When he opened his eyes he asked where we were, and I told him the truth, which was that nobody knew. He laughed, a dry sound like a hatch unsealing, and said the sentence had always been meant for the ship, not for him. I pointed the lamp up at the coolant housing, where the grease pencil still showed through the paint. We bent our course round the dead sun that morning, and I left the wall as it was.
