Blue TARDIS with circular rings on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A blue police box with a dark outline and window detailing sits on the upper arm, with several black concentric ring motifs stacked above and below it. The blue fill is solid and even, while the rings are drawn in heavier black linework with some inner detail. The subject is centred against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background, with a yellow top and dark strap visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Nell,

We pulled into the field at Hexham on Tuesday and found a blue police box already parked by the generator, though nobody on the lot could say who had brought it. Dad says it was there before the lorries, wheels sunk to the axle in the wet, and the padlock on the door had rusted through. I put my shoulder to it and the door swung open onto a room with a brass rail running round the walls in rings, like the spinning wheel on the rifle range but far bigger.

Mrs Kettering from the candyfloss stall went in after me to look, and came out twenty minutes later saying she had been gone a minute. One side of her hair had turned white. She wouldn't say more than that, only that the rings on the walls were counting something, and it wasn't money.

The box is still there. This morning someone had painted the same black rings along the side of the ghost train, and the paint was still tacky when I touched it. Dad wants it moved. Mr Pryce says it's good for trade, people paying a shilling just to stand outside and stare. I told him he could go and count the rings himself.

I'm writing from the back of the coconut shy while the lamps go out one by one. If this reaches you, don't come to the fair this year. Tell Mum I've kept the key, and I'll bring it home when the wheels stop turning.

Your brother, Tom
