Nell had been fourteen months on the barge Marigold when the blue box turned up in the hold, wedged between two coils of rope and a crate of unlabelled tins. It was no bigger than a wardrobe and smelled of hot dust and something like oranges. Her uncle Ambrose swore he had never seen it before, and Ambrose had never lied to her about anything except his age.

The door was stiff, but it gave when she leaned her shoulder into it. Inside it was far larger than the outside had any right to be, a round room humming with brass and glass, and in the middle of it a man in a tweed jacket was trying to free a scarf from a lever. The scarf was striped in every colour the paint tin in the wheelhouse had ever held, and it had caught on the controls like a fish on a line. "Don't pull it," he said, without looking up. "It's been doing this since Lisbon."

Nell knelt, found the loose end, and unwound it section by section, the way her mother had taught her to free a mooring line. When the last loop slid away, the room lurched, the lights flared gold, and the barge outside the window was gone. In its place stretched a river of silver under a sky with two moons, and the man finally looked at her properly.

"Right," he said. "Do you fancy seeing the bottom of the Thames when it was still a sea?" Nell looked at the scarf in her hands, handed it back to him, and said she would be needing her coat.
