Colour tattoo of a blue TARDIS filled with pink and purple galaxy shading, with a quote arcing above and below it, on the outer thigh.

TARDIS in a galaxy wash with quote on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A blue police box, the TARDIS, fills the centre of the design with its doors, windows and roof sign drawn in clean outlines. The box is shaded with soft pink, purple and blue washes and small white dots that suggest stars, giving a painterly galaxy effect. Two lines of lettering curve above and below the box, reading "We're all stories in the end" and "Just make it a good one, eh?"

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ivor Pryce had been told twice that his speech ran long, so he sat in the marquee at Penmaen Farm with the card folded in his breast pocket, its corners gone soft from handling. The wind kept lifting the side flap and letting in a square of evening, pale and violet over the hay bales.

His granddaughter Nell had drawn up the seating plan herself, and she had put the bride's uncle beside the cake table on purpose, because he had once tried to sell her a moped. Across the tent the groom's brother was quietly eating the sugared almonds. Ivor watched the bride's mother fold her napkin into a small hard square, the way his late wife used to fold hers when she was nervous and pretending not to be.

When his turn came he did not look at the card. He told them about the winter a blue box appeared on the sidings at Dinas Junction, the week a gale took the roof off the signal hut, and how he had stepped inside out of the sleet and found a room full of stars overhead and a woman with a chipped mug who said he was late for something important. He never said what it was. He said that was the trouble with stories: nobody tells you how they end.

"So you have to be the one who writes it," he said, and he raised his glass to the couple. "Make it a good one, eh?" Nell mouthed the words back at him from the far table. Behind her the flap lifted once more, and the violet square filled with the first stars of the evening.
