TARDIS in an ornate frame on the upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A blue police box, the TARDIS, sits inside an oval gold ornamental frame with scrolled details, and a red bow tie hangs at the bottom of the frame. The background is a deep blue starry sky with a glowing galaxy and a bright star, and the text POLICE BOX is visible on the roof of the box. The shading is smooth and realistic, with strong highlights on the frame and bow tie, and the tattoo is centred on the upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Harrow was sent to fetch the ewe from the edge of Blackmere Wood before the light went, and she found the blue box standing between two beeches as though it had grown there. Its lamp was dark. Somebody had hung a red bow tie on the nail where the parish notices used to be pinned, and the wind kept turning it straight again.

She tried the door because it was raining and because nobody had ever told her not to. Inside, the floor rose three steps higher than the box had any right to, and the ceiling was a sky of tiny lamps, the Milky Way spilling across it like milk over the edge of a table. A man in shirtsleeves was bent over a brass lever, humming a hymn out of tune. "Mind the ewe," he said without looking up. "She's in Tuesday, and she's cross about it."

He said the box went wherever it was wanted, and Nell, who had wanted for a year to be anywhere but the cold kitchen where her father counted coins into jars, did not argue. He turned a dial to a valley she half recognised, with a church and a mill and a river the colour of pewter. "Take the bow tie back with you," he said. "Hang it where you found it, or the next one won't come."

Outside, the rain had stopped. The ewe stood by the gate, staring at Nell as if she had seen all of it and meant to tell no one. Nell pinned the silk to the nail, which was dry now, and when she turned round the box was gone, leaving only a faint blue scuff in the wet grass. She walked the ewe home along the lane, and the bell in her apron pocket kept ringing on every step, though the animal's own neck was bare.
