TARDIS, wolf and roses design
Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a police box at the centre, flanked by a howling wolf on the left and outstretched wings on both sides. Three roses, a daisy-like flower, antlers, a leaf and a banner reading Madman In A Box sit across the lower and upper parts of the composition, with circular Gallifreyan-style symbols in the background. The artwork uses solid black linework and fills with no shading or colour, arranged in a symmetrical, emblem-like layout.

Ada had been deadheading the old roses since breakfast, and the blue box at the bottom of the garden had been humming since before the kettle boiled. It stood where the potting shed used to be, a tall cabinet with a small lamp on its roof and letters above the door that the rain had nearly taken. Nobody in the village had ever phoned from it. Her grandfather had said it arrived the winter the walled garden flooded, and that the wolf carved into the gatepost had been watching it ever since.

"You're letting the heads go to seed," said a voice from the doorway. A man in a coat far too long for him leaned out, holding a tin of biscuits in one hand and a spanner in the other. He looked at the roses as if they had personally insulted him. "Three of them, and a sunflower pretending to be a daisy. Who planted them in a row like that?"
"I did," Ada said. "Forty years ago, when I wanted something that would outlast the weather."
He stepped onto the path, and the box behind him was far deeper than it had any right to be: shelves of seed packets, a staircase spiralling into brass light, a clock with too many hands. "Come and see the inside," he said. "Bring the secateurs. We'll need a cutting for the other side." She hesitated, then took the clippers from her apron pocket and followed him in.
When the door closed, the garden went quiet. Hours later, or perhaps no time at all, Ada stepped out again to find the box gone and the path dry. In the bed where it had stood, a single pale daisy was opening against the wall, and beside it, pressed into the mud, lay a paw print the size of a dinner plate. She knelt, touched a petal, and found a cutting from the roses tucked under her fingers, its stem already rooted in wet earth.
