Tattoo machine with lace garter on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A detailed tattoo of a tattoo machine with an orange frame, grey coil, purple wrap and needle sits above a black lace garter band. The shading is soft and smooth, giving the machine a three-dimensional look against the skin. The orange and purple tones contrast with the black and grey lace, and the needle tip extends down over the lace edge.

The orange frame had been dropped down the stairs at the Gaiety, soaked in a bucket of disinfectant, and once used to prop a tent flap in Skegness, but Walter Pye still swore it buzzed truer than anything Birmingham had made since. Ruth Maddox believed him mostly because she had nothing else to hold on to that week.

The woman who came in on the Tuesday brought a photograph in a brown envelope: a black lace garter, gone brown at the edges, once worn by a grandmother who had sewn bobbins at a Nottingham mill and kept her wages tucked into its elastic. She wanted it copied exactly, down to the rosettes. Ruth spent three evenings with a loupe and a pencil. On the fourth, Walter wound the purple wrap around the coil himself, the way he always had, and said the lace would fight her every inch of the way.
It did. Every scallop wanted to close up, and twice she lifted the needle before the black had settled. Walter sat on the stool by the sink, pretending to read the racing pages, and said nothing until the last petal was done. Then he leaned over and studied the spot where the needle tip hung past the lace edge, a small dark point like a full stop.
"That's where I signed my first one," he said. "Nineteen fifty-eight, a sailor's garter, and nobody ever noticed." Ruth wiped the design with a cool cloth and looked for it under the lamp. There, tucked into the shadow of a loop, was a single W no bigger than a grain of rice. She had nearly missed it too.
