Tattooed forearms holding a flower bouquet

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A person in a cream dress holds a tall bouquet of peach poppies, sprigs of white and pink blossom and green foliage in front of their face. Both forearms are visible below the rolled sleeves, carrying tattoos with leafy swirls and red floral motifs. The plain light grey background keeps the focus on the flowers and the arms.

Dear Nell,

The fair pulled into Harrow Common on Tuesday with the rain behind it, and by Thursday I had sold out of everything except the poppies. Peach ones, the late kind that never last past a day in a warm tent. Mr Okonedo's boy brought them over from the allotments in a crate lined with wet sacking, and I keep them in the shade of the candyfloss stall where the air stays cool. Half the village wants them for funerals and the other half wants them because they're pretty. I sell to both.

Yesterday a girl from the big wheel came asking for a bunch to take to her gran in the hospice at Crewe. She paid in coppers and wouldn't take her change. I wrapped them in newspaper, then in the blue tissue Dad saved from Christmas, and tied the stems with green twine. I pushed in a sprig of white blossom from the hedge by the car park because it looked too plain without it.

The thing you'd laugh at is the vase. I had nothing to put them in except the old enamel jug from the tea urn, dented on one side. I filled it, and three poppies keeled over before the girl had even left the tent, so I tucked a fistful of leaves round them like a collar and they stood up straight. Leaves always hold a thing up if you let them.

Anyway. I'm sending you the last pressed poppy from the book, the one with the red ink petal. Keep it in your Bible. Tell Mum the caravan's fine and the ferris wheel has finally stopped squeaking.

Love, Bea
