Floral tattoos on back and upper arm
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman with her hair in a low bun is photographed from behind, holding a loose bouquet of roses, hellebores and green foliage in a grassy field. Colourful tattoos cover her upper back and upper arm, including red and pink roses and blue and grey shapes, with soft, painterly shading. The pale, airy composition is softly lit and keeps the tattoos as a secondary detail beside the flowers and white lace dress.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
She went down the lane at dawn with the secateurs in her apron and the cutting wrapped in a damp handkerchief, because her mother had said a rose that was going to be sold ought to be carried like a baby. The nursery at Clee Hill had two hundred bushes of the old pink damask, and only one of them bloomed twice, and that one, Nell knew, was the reason the London man had come up on the bus with his cheque book open.

Her brother Tom wanted it sold. Tom wanted a new roof on the potting shed and a van with a working heater, and he said so plainly over the kettle. Nell said nothing for three days. On the fourth she dug a hole beside the hellebores under the north wall, where nothing was supposed to grow, and set the cutting in with a dessert spoon. The hellebores hung their heads like mourners, green and maroon, and she told them to mind their own business.
In May the rose came. It opened pale at the edges and darker at the heart, and the first bee found it before Nell had her boots on. She sent the London man a postcard of the wall. He wrote back asking the price of the north border. She wrote that the border was not for sale, and that a rose which had once been carried in a handkerchief would not be carried anywhere else.
She keeps the handkerchief in the drawer with the seed packets, brown now at the folds, and each spring when the buds swell she takes it out and holds it up to the light, to see whether they still need carrying.
