Teacup, rose and leaves on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A teacup with a dotted steam trail rises above a rose on the left and a sprig of striped leaves below. The outlines are bold and solid, while the cup, rose petals and steam are filled with stippled dotwork shading. The design is in black and grey ink and sits centred on the skin against a plain blue background.

The urn has been coughing since Margate, and you are the only one who knows how to coax it back to life. Ruth says it sounds like a goose with a grudge, and she is not wrong, but the goose still makes tea, and on a February morning in a field outside Ashford that is worth more than sawdust. You scrape the scale from the element with a bent teaspoon while the lorries idle behind you and the canvas sags with rain.

The crowds stopped coming somewhere around the summer the bank took the big top's deposit. Now there are four acrobats, two jugglers who argue about rent, and Mr Hollis, who still wears his frock coat to count the takings into a biscuit tin. You pour for all of them from the same brown pot, two sugars for the flyer, none for the old clown who hasn't smiled since the elephant went to a farm in Wales. The steam climbs from each cup and hangs in the cold air like the ghosts of applause.
On the last night the ring is empty, the lamps are down to one, and the rose you painted on the wagon door has begun to flake. You carry a single cup out under the rigging, fill it from the pot, and set it on the lowest trapeze bar where the spotlight used to fall. Mr Hollis finds you there with the biscuit tin under his arm. He lifts the cup, blows across the top, and says, quite formally, that it is the finest thing the circus has ever served. You laugh, and the steam goes up and up into the dark until neither of you can see where it ends.
