Dear Edie, The travelling man came through Mardle on Tuesday with a cart of second-hand clocks and a brass ring the size of a dinner plate, and he would not sell it, only show it. Pat Ashdown at the chemist's swore it hummed. I have it on my mantel now, and I have not slept well since, because every time the sun comes through the lace curtains it throws those little rings across the wallpaper like ripples on a pond.

He left it with me, which I did not expect. He said his own clock was running down and he had somewhere to be by Friday, and he asked only that I keep the rings turning. He had a face like a boy who has been told off and forgiven in the same breath. When I asked his name he said it was too long for the sign over the door, so I should call him the Traveller and be done with it.

Before he went he stood at the gate and said something I have been turning over ever since. He said, "Keep the kettle on for me, Winnie, and don't wait up." I laughed, but then the wind slammed the gate shut, and when I looked back the lane was empty and the rings on the wall had all gone still.

I have wound the thing every morning since. Last night, for the first time, it ticked backwards, and I swear the centre was a shade brighter. Come up on the train at Easter and tell me I am being silly. Bring your good cups.
