Teal trailer and flamingos with slogan on side
Other · Mixed · Photo
A teal caravan with yellow-framed windows sits beside a wooden sign and two pink flamingos on a patch of grass. The words TRAILER TRASH FOR LIFE AND PROUD OF IT run around the design in black, hand-drawn capitals. Soft teal, pink and green fill the trailer, birds and ground, with dark outlines around the main shapes.

The flamingos were Ray's idea, three of them bought off a man at a car boot in Mablethorpe, and by the Saturday of Gary's wedding the one with the cracked neck had been propped against the bins for a fortnight because nobody could face moving it. The vicar's hatchback was stuck in the mud by the gate. Nessa's mother, Caroline, who lived in a village with a pub in the Good Food Guide, stood on the grass in heels, holding a flute of prosecco as if somebody might try to take it off her.

"Is this where you're sleeping, then?" she asked, looking up at the teal side of the van with its yellow window frames, the paint still bright after thirty years of Lincolnshire wind.
"Only if you insult the caterers," I said. "Then it's the car park."
The best man stood up at the trestle tables and joked that the van had more wheels than the bride's family had manners, and everyone laughed except Caroline. Then Nessa took the microphone, slipped off her shoes and said she had been born in a trailer on this very park and had never once been ashamed of it. She pointed at the sign Ray had painted, the letters gone soft at the edges, and the whole field cheered until the sheep at the far fence started up too.
Later I found Caroline sitting on the fold-out step with a paper cone of chips, her heels lined up in the grass beside her. "Your kettle's better than the one at the village hall," she said. "Don't tell anyone." I told her I'd take it to my grave. The last thing I saw that night was her pink lipstick on the rim of a mug, and the flamingo with the cracked neck still standing guard by the bins.
