Teapot and flowers with banner quote

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A teapot with a domed lid and a handle sits in the centre, decorated with red flowers and green leaves, and a blue shadow sits behind it. A ribbon banner across the bottom and the top carries the wording, which is partly cropped across the three vertical panels. Bold black outlines and flat fills give a classic colour look against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan Ivy has filled me at half past four every first Sunday since 1962, and I have never once been allowed on the table without a doily under me. The harbour at Porthlinney is a poor place for a party. The fishermen come in smelling of diesel and the gulls take the crusts before anyone can stop them. Still, the whole street climbs the hill to her front room, pretending they came for the view.

This month the lifeboat crew were late. The wind had swung east and the Maud Eliza had been past the breakwater since dawn, hunting for a lad from the chandlery who had taken his dinghy out to prove a point. Nan kept my spout aimed at the window. Every few minutes she lifted my lid, peered at the hill and said, to nobody, 'They'll want something hot when they're back.' She filled me again and again, and the water went from rolling to a whisper to a sulk.

They came in at ten to six, grey and salted, the lad wrapped in a foil blanket that crackled like kindling. Nan asked no questions. She poured eleven cups, one after another, and I grew lighter with each, until my last drop came out with a hiccup and splashed her good saucer. She laughed until she had to sit down. 'Ain't no party like my nana's tea party,' she told the lad, tapping my lid with one knuckle, 'and it's the only one ever held in a gale.'

Then they all sat on the carpet with their boots steaming by the fire, and Nan lifted me once more, and nobody in that room was cold again.
