A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The travelling fair came over the moor in the last week of August with two caravans fewer than the year before. Its owner, a thin man called Abel Crane, had sold the elephant to a farm near Lancaster and the ring horses to a glue works, and what remained was a patched big top, a helter-skelter with missing steps, and a woman named Mirren who kept the ice cream stall at the gate.

Mirren made her sundaes the old way, in three glasses stacked one on another. The top glass held pink for strawberry, the middle held green for mint, and the lowest held purple for blackcurrant. A single cherry sat on the rim like a bead on a thread. The lowest glass was painted with red and pink roses, a gift from a potter in Stoke who had once asked her to stay and then married a dentist instead. Nobody in the town could say why the fair kept coming back to that field, but the children came for the sundaes, and the children's mothers came for the sundaes too.

On the last night, with rain drumming the canvas, Abel sat on an upturned crate and told her to sell the stand to the council man who wanted it for the Whitsun fete. Mirren said nothing. A boy of about seven stood in the mud outside with a fist full of wet pennies, and she spooned him a sundae anyway, pink, green and purple, and gave him the cherry too.

In the morning the fair was gone and the field was empty except for the three glasses, still stacked, left on the stall with the rain running off them. The cherry was gone from the top. The roses on the bottom glass were bright in the wet grass, and the boy was already halfway across the moor, holding the cherry up to the sun like a coin.
