You'll want to hear about the kingdom of Haldmoor, where the roofs slope so steep the children learn to walk on their heels. There was a boy there called Tobin Ash who had never once been told he could not do a thing, and so he could do most of them.

One wet October he climbed onto the sill of his mother's bedroom window, held his arms out like a gull, and stepped off. He did not fall. The wind took him up over the chimney pots and he laughed so loud the bakers' dog started barking at the moon. Below in the lane, the Pennick sisters, who were nine and seven and never allowed out after supper, saw him go and climbed straight out after him, skirts hitched, bare feet on the slates.

Then the others came: the twins from the mill, a girl called Hesper who kept a jar of snails, and little Abel Crane, who was only four and cried the whole way up. They flew in a line over the rooftops, a dark string of shapes against the lamplit windows, and the grown-ups came out in their nightcaps and counted them and could never make the number come right.

Now here is the part you will not like. Tobin flies on yet, they say, and every night he drops a single shadow onto the roofs of Haldmoor, and any child who sees one must stand on the sill and reach. Mind yourselves. Your mother's window is open, and I can hear the wind.
