Red Om symbol design
Colour · Flash
The image shows a stylised red Om symbol made of thick, flowing strokes with curled ends and a small dot at the top. It appears on a pale, textured background, possibly paper or fabric, with no body visible. The solid red shapes have smooth, tapering edges, suggesting a stencil or drawn tattoo design.

You are counting the guy ropes at dawn in a wet field outside Lincoln, where the big top sags like a tired lung. Harrow, the ringmaster, has sold the elephant to a man from Leeds and the calliope has not played since March. What is left is you, the gong, and a canvas bag of tent pegs that rattle like teeth. Your job has always been the sound. You strike the brass once at the start of each show and then hold the note, low in the belly, until it rises through the nose and thins to nothing at the top.

Madame Sefton taught you that when you were sixteen and sweeping sawdust for coppers. She said the long hum was not a word at all but the noise the world makes before it remembers it is a world. She drew a curl in the air with one finger and tapped a point at the very top of it, and said that was the place where the sound stops being yours and belongs to the room. You believed her then. You still believe her, which is more than the accountants do.
Last Saturday there were six people in the stands and a collie that barked at the trapeze. You struck the gong anyway, held the note until your ribs ached, and was about to pack up when a girl of perhaps seven, sitting alone on the front bench with a paper cone of chips, hummed back at you. It was a half-tone flat and it wobbled, then it found the pitch and stayed there. Nobody else moved. The lamps flickered, the canvas hummed with the wind, and for one long breath the whole tired tent seemed to lean in to listen.
