Before the square bell had thought about waking, Marta Vosk knelt at the oven mouth and tested the heat with her bare forearm. Her daughter Ilse sat on the flour sacks with her chin on her fists, watching the dough swell under its cloth like something breathing.

Ilse had been promised a wedding ring loaf, the kind the old bakers in the valley twisted so the crust met itself without a seam. Marta had never got the twist right. Her rings came out fat on one side and thin on the other, and every morning Ilse told her so, loudly, with her mouth full of crumbs.

"Hold it like this," Marta said, and lifted the small hand over the dough so their fingers closed on the same rope of pastry. The loop came round under their palms and, for once, the join disappeared. Ilse laughed so hard the cat fled off the sill and knocked a tin of cinnamon onto the floor.

They carried the first loaf down the lane while the sky was still the colour of skimmed milk. The widow at the mill took it, tore it open, and pressed two eggs and a jar of plum jam into Marta's apron pocket. Halfway home Ilse stopped, took her mother's wrist, and bent the bread ring until it sat on her arm like a bangle. "Now you have to carry me," she said, and Marta, who had carried her every day of her life, did.
