Texas state outline in 3D shading
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the outline of the state of Texas with a five-pointed star cut into its eastern section, rendered as a raised, bevelled shape. Soft grey shading and dark edges create a three-dimensional, embossed effect across the map and star. The design is centred on a plain skin background with even lighting.

Dorothea Quill had cut eleven maps into limestone, and the twelfth was giving her trouble because the commissioner wanted the star raised. "Raised like a badge, not scratched like a bill," he had said, tapping the drawing with a cigar that had gone out. So she bevelled the edges of the star with a flat chisel until its points stood proud of the state, and she spent the morning on the eastern shoulder where the stone was softest.

The crossing at Laredo was busy that week. Carts rattled past the customs shed with bolts of cotton and crates of rifles, and a boy sold lemonade from a barrel at the foot of the bridge. Dorothea worked with the window open, listening to the Spanish and English laid over each other like the grain in the rock. Her father had taught her that a map was only a promise about where a line would hold, and that no line held better than the one a man was willing to stand on.
On the last afternoon a rider came up from the river with a surveyor's chain slung across his saddle. He wanted to know why the star sat so far east of the river's bend. She told him the truth: the commissioner had measured it from the county seat, not from the water. He laughed and said the water had never once agreed with a man's measurements.
When the plate was set she stood back and watched the light slide across the bevels. The star threw a shadow onto the border itself, a small dark point where the state and the river argued. She did not correct it.
