Texas outline with script home on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of the state of Texas sits on the side of the ribs, with the word home written in flowing script running along its lower right edge. The linework is even and thin with no shading, and the image is entirely black and grey. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against plain pale skin, with a white garment edge visible at the top.

The fog had not lifted off the Sabine by six, so Dessa kept the tow at idle and let the current do the work. Wes sat on an upturned cable drum with the chart spread across his knees, weighted at the corners by a shackle, a tin of tobacco and a Thermos cap. For an hour he had been tracing the state with a carpenter's pencil, the lines going soft and wobbly whenever the engines shuddered through the deck plates.

Dessa came out with two mugs of coffee and looked over his shoulder. "That's not Texas," she said. "Texas has a notch on top, like somebody sat on it." He told her it was the panhandle, and that he had drawn it the way his mother used to draw it on the back of shopping lists, square and certain, a box with a boot on it. She handed him a mug and asked what was missing. He wrote a word along the bottom edge in capitals that drifted into script halfway through, because his hand had got tired of being careful.

By seven the fog had thinned to a grey gauze, and a refinery flare pricked up on the western bank, then a line of pumpjacks, then the flat green edge of the land itself. Dessa throttled up. The barge began to move again, pushing its load of sand toward the Gulf with a long, patient groan. Wes should have rubbed the pencil out. Instead he pressed his thumb against the word until the graphite smeared into the coastline, and he left it there for the river to read.
