Texas flag state outline on chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a large tattoo of the state of Texas on the chest, filled with the Texas flag: a blue field with a white five-pointed star on the left and white and red bands on the right. The flag is shaded to look like fabric with soft folds and highlights, and the outline is surrounded by red skin tones that suggest a torn or peeled edge. The composition is centred on the chest and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Marisol had the flag spread across two trestle tables at the back of the upholstery shop on Magnolia Avenue, the way her father used to lay out saddle patterns. Sun had bleached the red band to the colour of weak tea, and someone had torn the hoist with a staple gun. She pinned the blue field flat and ran her thumb over the star, feeling for the stitching.

The star was the only part that had held. Five points, its edges bound in white thread her grandmother had used on the first flag, forty years back. Marisol remembered the funeral only in pieces: the folded triangle on the coffin, her uncle's hands shaking as he passed it to the sergeant. Nobody had warned her that the cloth around the star would give up long before the star did.
Inside the hem, near the fly, she found writing in faded marker. R. Ochoa, Lubbock, 1971. A name she had never heard, in a hand she didn't know. She sat with it for a while, then cut the old threads one by one, kept the star whole, and sewed a new field around it, blue as a swimming pool, the red and white bands rebuilt from a bolt of cotton she'd been saving for something else.
At dusk she hung it in the front window, where the light from the highway came through the glass at a slant. The new red caught the glow first. The star stayed white, the way it had always been, where the sun had never quite reached it.
