Ada broke the ice on the water trough with the back of the hatchet before the heifers could come down to drink. Her father had always said the land told you what the weather meant if you knew where to look, and that winter the fence posts stood white to the waist and the creek ran black beneath the ice.

The farm was shaped like a ragged boot heel of land, the way the old county map showed it, and the two families had argued over its edges since before Ada's grandmother was born. The Pruitts claimed the blue end up by the creek, where a pale star of frozen pond lay in the hollow. The Varners said the banded pasture ran straight to the road. Nobody had ever walked the line to settle it.
In the last week of January, when the snow lay so deep the sheep could not be reached, old Mr Pruitt came across the field on foot. He carried no lantern and no papers. He knelt by the trough, pressed his thumb into the snow and drew the outline of the whole holding, lopsided and honest, with the star where the pond was. Then he drew the red band along the bottom, the one the clay made every spring when the thaw came off the south slope.
"Your side or mine," he said, "the water doesn't care which."
Ada took the hatchet and cut a gap in the wire between the two pastures so the stock could walk where they pleased. By March the snow had gone and the outline was only a line of damp earth, and the red clay showed clean along the south edge, where both families had agreed to share the water.
