Black ink lettering reading think in script above POSITIVE in capitals, with a cross running through the word, tattooed on the inner forearm.

Think positive lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads 'think' in cursive script above 'POSITIVE' in bold block capitals, with a cross drawn through the word between the letters. The linework is clean and even, and the lettering is filled in solid black with no visible shading. The photograph is taken close up on the inner forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Tom,

The shop on Harbour Row is finished, and you'd have laughed at the owner. Mr Okonedo wanted THINK POSITIVE across the front window in block capitals, which I did, and then he asked me to run a cross through the middle of the word so customers would know the chemist was still open on Sundays. I told him a cross through a shop window is not something the council allows. He said the council had never met his mother. So I cut it in gold leaf, between the I and the T, and it has taken three days for me to stop seeing it when I shut my eyes.

The script I did first, with the quill brush you bought me in Lewes, because that word needed to lean. Capitals stand up straight. Cursive has to lean into the wind or it looks like it's giving up. My old teacher at the college told me that, and I say it to every apprentice who comes through the door, though none of them listen.

Mrs Dunn from number nine came out with a flask of tea while I was on the stepladder. She read the window twice, then asked whether the cross was meant as a warning. I said no, it was a full stop with ambition. She laughed so hard she had to sit down on the kerb.

Enclosed is the layout sketch and the invoice, which is larger than you'd think. Ring me on Sunday. Your dad's tools are still in the van, and I haven't the heart to sell them yet.

Love, Mum
