Think positive lettering on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised toward the camera, showing a black tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm. The words think in cursive script sit above POSITIVE in block capitals, and a cross replaces the T in POSITIVE. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, with a soft, sunlit background of trees and a hill.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tremayne had painted the boats' names on their bows for thirty-one years, and she knew the letters in her sleep: the round hook of an S, the belly of a B. The Bright Hope needed new paint after the winter, and so did the wheelhouse board of the Mary Ann, which had flaked down to a grey ghost of its own name. She laid her brushes out on the quay wall in the order her father had taught her, sable first, then the fine liners.

Her nephew Alun watched from the coil of rope beside her. "Think positive," he read, squinting at the sketch she had pinned under the tarpaulin. "Who's that for?"

"Hodge. He wants it on the spare float, the one he calls his lucky board." She dipped the liner and drew the cursive first, loose and slanting as if the wind had been at it. Then the block capitals, POSITIVE, each letter square and certain. When she reached the T she stopped, because Hodge had asked for a cross in it, the way the chapel up the hill carved one above its door. She ran the upright through the stem of the T and the bar across its top, and the word stood a little straighter for it, as if it had been holding its breath.

The float went out with the Dawn Chorus the next morning. Hodge came back at dusk with two crates of pollack and a grin that took up his whole face. "Blew a gale on the nets," he said, "and the board was the only thing still floating. Cross and all."

Mags wiped her brushes and said nothing, because the tide was turning and the gulls were already quarrelling over the gutted fish.
