Think Positive lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells think in a loose black script above POSITIVE in capitals of a thin serif face. The cross forms the T in POSITIVE, and its upright extends below the baseline. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a white wall and yellow surface, with the wrist and forearm running diagonally across the frame.

The paint had been drying on the laundry fascia since dinner, and Mr Hale was still stood in the wet road with his hands in his coat, squinting up at it as if it owed him money. Ruth had lettered the first three words herself, the loose black script of think sloping down the board like a dog being walked. Mrs Pennock had asked for something to keep her going after the bank turned her down, and Hale had said a sign was the cheapest medicine going.

"Put the capitals in," he said. "Thin serif. Nothing showy."
She did, letter by letter, until she came to the T in POSITIVE and her brush hesitated. Hale had taught her to cross a T with one clean stroke, but the old tin of enamel was thick and she dragged the upright long, under the baseline, and then the crossbar sat on it like a sign pinned to a gate. It looked, Ruth thought, like a grave marker that had been planted in the wrong place.
"Leave it," Hale said, and she turned, expecting a telling-off. He wiped his hands on a rag. "My father painted church boards. Every T he ever made stood up out of the line like that. Said it was the only letter that needed holding up."
Mrs Pennock came out at six with a mug of tea and read the board for a long time. Then she tapped the glass of the door with one knuckle and said she'd keep it exactly as it was. Rain had started, and it ran off the crossbar in a single bead, down the upright, past the baseline, and dropped onto the pavement where the wet had already gathered in the shape of a small, steady cross.
