Pink Floyd lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small tattoo on the inner wrist, with the words Pink Floyd written in two lines of loose, hand-drawn script. The ink is a single dark tone with solid, slightly uneven lines and no shading. The hand rests on a pale striped fabric, and a warm light flare crosses the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ivy Pascoe ran the Thursday stall at Hollin Market with a biscuit tin of cassettes nobody wanted. Most were rubbish: a Christmas compilation, someone's wedding tape recorded over with the football, a Phil Collins with the sleeve chewed by a dog. The lot she bought from a widower in Bexhill was different. Every spine had been labelled in neat capitals, except one, which had two loose lines of blue biro leaning into each other like people waiting for a bus.

The tape inside was Wish You Were Here, the card water-stained, the wheel of the cassette wound tight. Ivy played it on the stall's battered Sony while rain came sideways off the car park and the gulls gave up on the bins. She wasn't a music woman. She listened anyway, because the handwriting said someone had meant it to be heard.

Tucked behind the card was a folded note in the same hand: Sheila, you never let me finish a side. Play the whole thing before you tell me it's too long. Ivy laughed out loud, startling a man who was buying a colander. Then she noticed the second side ran blank for the last four minutes, as if whoever recorded it had stopped and waited for something to finish.

She didn't sell it. She wrapped the tape in the Bexhill Observer, wrote Not for sale on the paper in her own square capitals, and put it under the till where the rain couldn't reach. Then she switched the radio off and waited for the car park to empty, which, she supposed, was the whole thing played through.
