Thistle tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The design shows a thistle with a flower head and smaller buds on a curving leaf or stem, drawn as a single outline. The linework is even and unshaded, and the ink looks pale against the skin, which may mean the tattoo is fresh or healing. A close crop centres the design on the forearm with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the dog. This is the tale my grandmother told me about the thistle that grew at the forest's edge, past the last cottage where the lane gives up and turns to moss. Nobody in Hollin Parrock would cut it, though it stuck its spikes into every boot and sleeve that brushed it. The old men said a woman named Agnes Tullow had planted it the year her husband went for the wool-boats and never came back, and that she sang to it each evening so it would keep its purple head up against the frost.

One winter the baker's boy, Ned, took a bet from the squire's sons that he could pull the plant out by its roots before the church bell rang twelve. He went out with a spade and a lantern, and he dug and dug, and every time he hauled on the stem the leaves curled round his wrist like a hand that did not want letting go. When the bell started, he sat down in the wet and cried, and the thistle bent its head down to him, and a little bud at its side opened, soft as a sleeve of silk.

Ned never spoke of what the thistle told him. But he went home and kept his mouth shut, and when the boats came back in spring, Agnes was standing at the shore with her hair gone white and a single feather of his heron-grey shawl in her hand. She had been waiting, the story goes, for someone brave enough to be gentle with the plant. So mind the thorns on the way home, and leave the green things be.
