Hearts and swirling vine on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A column of outlined hearts, some stacked and some joined by curling tendrils, runs vertically up the ankle. The lines are solid black with an even weight and no shading. The plain pale skin and blue backdrop keep the focus on the design.

Long after the rains stopped coming to Harrow Deep, the old seed-keeper Ada Vane climbed the cliff path each morning with a basket on her hip and a knife in her apron. Her vine had climbed the drystone wall of the seed-house for three generations, and every spring it bore the same thing: little hearts, each drawn in a single dark line, each joined to the next by a tendril that curled back on itself like a question.

The children of the valley asked why the hearts were empty. Ada told them that a heart filled in was a heart that kept its own warmth, while a heart drawn in outline was one that let the wind go through. That was how the tower-folk of the north had once made their charms, she said, so the sea-fog could pass without snagging. Nobody in Harrow Deep believed a word of it, but they kept the vine clear of frost all the same.
One autumn a surveyor from the coastal city arrived with a brass tripod and a clerk who wrote everything down. He measured the wall, counted the hearts, and said the vine was a fine specimen of something, though he could not say what. He asked whether it was for sale. Ada gave him a cutting wrapped in wet sacking and told him to plant it where the wind came off the water, and to be patient, because the tendrils would only climb toward a thing they could hold.
Three winters later a lamp appeared on the headland, lit at dusk, and Ada swore it was the surveyor's, though nobody had seen him since. She stood at the wall with her knife in her hand and watched the light flicker through the empty hearts as the fog rolled in, and for once she did not cut anything back.
