Three sunflowers on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three sunflowers sit side by side in a row across the inner wrist, each with yellow and orange petals outlined in black and dark brown centres. The linework is bold and the petals are shaded with darker tones to add depth. The yellow ink dominates against the pale skin, and the flowers are centred over the wrist on a plain background.

The rain had been falling on Thornbury market since before the bells, and by noon the stalls were bare but for Old Maud Pargeter and her tin bucket. In it stood three sunflowers cut from the field behind the mill, their heads bowed and dripping. Nobody stopped. Sunflowers were for summer weddings and sickrooms, the carters said, and this was neither.

A boy came running under the eaves with a bread roll in one fist and a farthing in the other. He asked what the flowers cost. Maud told him the price was that he must carry one of them to the sun before it set. The boy laughed and paid her anyway. He took the smallest, its petals gold at the rim and dark as strong tea at the heart, and he ran off towards the river holding it high like a lantern.
The rain stopped as the church clock struck four. The other two heads lifted slowly on their stalks, each turning away from the grey towards a gap in the cloud where the light came through thin and yellow. Maud had seen it happen before, though never with anyone watching who might have believed her.
The next market day the boy came back with his farthing still in his fist and asked whether the sun had been pleased. Maud said the sun was never pleased, only patient, and that it kept its accounts in petals. Then she wrapped the last two flowers in newspaper and pressed them on him for nothing, because the river had taken the first one and that, she said, was a fair debt paid.
