Two stick figures on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a pale foot with the toes visible, showing a small tattoo of two stylised figures with round heads, dotted detail and triangular bodies, joined by thin limbs. The linework is fine and even, in dark grey ink with no shading, and the figures sit off-centre on the top of the foot against a plain red background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now sit still, the pair of you, and stop picking at that scab on your knee. You want the story or you want to kick that tin about all afternoon? Right. Down in the Glynrhondda pit, the year the cage stuck at the fourth level, there were two lads on the lamp-room shift who could not abide each other. Tom Probert had a laugh like a broken hinge, and Idris Vaughan had hands that never stopped moving, and the whole row knew it would end in a fist.

It didn't end in a fist. It ended on the whitewashed wall by the lamp hooks, where one wet Tuesday Idris scratched two figures into the coal dust with a bit of shale. Round heads, two dots each for buttons, triangles for their Sunday coats, and arms stretched out thin as pit props. Tom stood there reading them with his cap in his hand for the best part of an hour. Then he took the shale off Idris and drew one more line, a long arm on the second figure, so that it reached.

The manager had the wall scrubbed by Friday. The cleaners went at it with carbolic and wire, and every mark came off except the reaching one, which had sunk into the lime where the men had breathed on it all week. Nobody could get it out, so they limewashed it over and left it.

And that's why, when you go down the Institute steps on a Sunday, you'll see Tom's grandson with a hand held out to nobody, and Idris's girl laughing at him for it. Now, the tin. Go on, fetch it.
