You are still holding the chalk when the band strikes up, and Ada Pell takes it from your fingers without looking at you. The Pavilion floor at Scarrow Bay has been scrubbed for the Saturday hop, but she has marked it again: three long arrows in white, crossing the boards one after another, with a fine pencilled web of triangles behind them that the dancers are meant to trace with their heels.

Dennis says the dotted lines show where the feet should land, not where they used to. He is a bus conductor with clean cuffs and no sense of rhythm, and he counts under his breath as if the diamond in the middle were a stop he has to reach before the bell. You steer him through the first corner and the lines hold. Behind you the caretaker sweeps up the pencil shavings, and the sound is like a brush drawn over wire.
The turn comes at the diamond, where all three arrows meet. Every couple is meant to split there and step out along a different shaft, and for one bar the whole hall moves in three directions at once. You let go of Dennis's hand on purpose. By the time the music resolves you are at the side doors with the rain blowing in across the lino, and the white arrowheads point out of the room toward the car park, the bay and the long road home. Nobody follows them, and nobody needs to.
