Three solid black bat silhouettes with outstretched wings are arranged in a diagonal line down the side of the neck, one near the ear and two lower down. The shapes are flat and dense with soft, slightly feathered edges and no interior detail or shading. The image is in black and grey against a pale, softly lit background, with the subject's hand and jaw visible at the left edge.

Old Hester kept the bell rope at St Oswin's, and every dusk the bats came out of the lime trees at the edge of Wrenfold and went up the church tower like smoke. Nobody in the village minded them. They ate the midges off the millpond and never once touched the bread on the sill.

The summer the miller's boy went missing in the forest, three bats came down the lane an hour after dark and settled on the stile, wings folded like umbrellas. Hester took her lantern and followed them. They flew low and a little ahead, stopping on each gatepost so she could catch up, past the charcoal burners' huts and into the beech wood where the path gave out.
The boy was sitting in a hollow under a fallen oak with one boot wedged in a fox earth. He was not crying. He had decided that crying was not worth the trouble. Hester worked the boot free with the hook from her apron, and the bats hung above her in the branches the whole way home, close enough that she could hear them ticking softly like a clock.
The miller paid her a shilling the next morning and asked what she had done to earn such help. She said she had done nothing, only given the bats a crust for their trouble, as anyone would. Every dusk after that, the three of them waited on the stile, and the boy sat on the step below them, counting their wings.
