Small skull and crossbones on a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a skull wearing a hat, with crossed bones behind it, sits on the back of the hand near the wrist. The design is in solid black ink with simple, bold outlines and little shading. The hand is lit against a plain black background, which isolates the tattoo and the fingers in the pose.

The flag was still dripping when Dorrie carried it up the tower, and I told her the gulls would have it off the rail by morning if she left it hanging in the wash-house. She didn't argue. She never argued with a thing she had already decided to do.

It was black cotton, cut from a schooner's mainsail that had piled onto the Carrack ledges in February. Someone had painted a skull on it with tar and a steady hand: a round head, two hollow eyes, and a battered tricorn pushed low over one of them. Two bones crossed beneath, like a pair of knitting needles laid on a tea towel. Dorrie traced the hat with her thumb and said the cabin boy who painted it was called Tobias Crane, that he had sold her grandfather a bottle of gin in 1921, and that nobody had seen him ashore since.
My father would have burned it. I kept thinking that, sitting by the cold stove with the needle going in and out of the hem, while the lamp above us swept the bay every fourteen seconds. Dorrie wanted to stitch a new hat on from the red wool of her school jumper, a proper one, so the skull would look less like a threat and more like someone's uncle in a bad mood.
We hung it on the gallery rail at dusk. From the sea, Dorrie said, it would look like a warning. From the sea, I said, it would look like a drowned boy in a red hat, winking each time the light came round.
